Durable and roomy Gi, perfect for heavy martial arts workouts.

Training at the dojo, there is a lot of camaraderie and you feel like you belong. There is close contact and you have to be friends. What goes along with this is the school’s uniform, most often taking the form of the gi. Mostly, you want to make sure your gi suits it’s purpose and looks good. It must be durable and fit right for mobility. It has to be able to take what you put it through. Here we will take a look at some great martial arts uniforms, first Karate gis that are suitable for putting the thing through the rigors of training and that serve to display your school colors. Then, we will look at some Jiu Jitsu gis.

I generally prefer a heavy weight gi. Light-weight gis, I have found, tend to easily fall off, the top slips out of the belt and you are forever trying to put yourself back together again in a heavy training session. Also, training is rough. Not only are you moving a lot and wearing down the uniform, but your partner is likely grabbing you and tossing you around. Even Karate involves throws, and, in addition, at least in the art I practice–Kenpo, there is a lot of grabbing–for controlling the opponent. I’ve seen plenty of uniforms get torn asunder.

Here are some good, durable and well-fitted Karate uniforms, designed to allow freedom of movement, they’re nice and loose, but will stay intact.

The 14 ounce Tokaido Arashi uniform’s stitching at the lapel, where so often those tears occur, make this gi strong and long-lasting. The shoulders are cut for ventilation, as you work up a sweat and also allow a good range of motion.

Of course, your school might wear the black gi too. I know, training in Kenpo, advanced ranks wear the black gi. It’s sort of a sign that you’ve made it, it’s a privilege that rewards you for your hard work. Here is a very good uniform that comes in both white and black. It is a 12 ounce heavyweight gi offered by the reputable Century martial arts supplier.

Of course, if you really want to go all out and get a high-quality, durable and comfortable gi, meant to last and for greater mobility, you will want the 14 ounce Ironman from Century. The gi is made from 100% cotton canvas, has an additional layer of fabric for those areas taking the most wear and tear (at the vents, the underarms and shoulders), has a roomy crotch and the seams and stitching are built for comfort and rugged treatment. Also, it just looks sharp!

Jiu Jitsu uniforms are meant to handle being pulled and yanked, because the art mostly involves grappling with lots of throws. Therefore, the typical Jiu Jitsu gi is somewhat flexible but also well stitched to handle rough treatment.

The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gi has the added benefit of having a tapered lapel so the opponent can’t as easily get hold of you. Yet the gi is made for freedom of movement, which is very necessary when rolling on the floor in the heat of sparring.

Both for the mat and for competition, the On The Mat Rip Stop Competition 420 gi is ideal. The top is made from 420 gram weight rip stop weave material (the stuff used in yacht sails, hot-air balloons and camping equipment–lightweight but strong) and a heat resistant foam collar, great for when that workout is heated and heavy. The pants are made from 8 ounce rip stop material.

So, clearly you are going to want a fairly roomy uniform that allows freedom of movement but one that is durable enough to handle your own movement and also being yanked and pulled from being grabbed during grappling. These high-quality, well-made heavyweight gis are made with all of those necessary specifications.
